#WeekendCoffeeShare (September 4, 2026)

Hi everyone on this late Friday evening. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again. It’s nearly 10:30PM as I start typing this post, so no more coffee for me. If you’d like something to drink though, feel free to grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather, like I usually do. It’s been cloudy and rainy most of the week with daytime temps around 20°C. It’s also still pretty warm indoors.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I’m still meeting my movement goal on my Apple Watch so far each day. Did I share that I finally got a perfect month again in August?

If we were having coffee, next I’d tell you that I’m still going strong with the culinary activities. On Wednesday, I cooked a creamy pasta dish. The recipe was supposed to be vegan with a plant-based Parmesan cheese alternative and coconut milk in it instead of cream and actual cheese. I got quite stressed early in the week, feeling guilty that I’d de-veganized the meal by choosing to get regular Parm. I’m not a vegan myself, but I once again twisted my best friend’s yapping about veganism to be a personal attack. It wasn’t, for clarity’s sake! In fact, when she found out I had cooked the dish for my fellow residents as well, she said she’d have discouraged me from using vegan Parm since it can be quite disappointing taste-wise to those who are used to consuming real cheese. She also made it clear that I don’t need to justify my lifestyle choices to her. I apologized for having misinterpreted her activism as a personal attack. By the way, the meal was good.

Pasta

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that I’ve been keeping a food log for the past few days in the MyFitnessPal app. I’m doing pretty well except that I’m finding it’s a struggle to get in enough protein on days that I’m not eating meat. I definitely need to research plant-based protein sources, since I’ve read on the Dutch Voedingscentrum (Food Center) site that it’s recommended to get 60% of your protein from plant-based sources. I’m also not getting in enough fiber or so the app says.

If we were having coffee, then I’d share that, today, we had French fries and a snack in honor of a fellow resident’s birthday. I’d also eaten an apfelstrüdel in the afternoon, so I exceeded my daily calorie goal by over 300.

I had originally planned to create crispy rice salad this weekend, but the shredded cabbage I got from the supermarket yesterday would’ve needed to be used by Sunday. I ate it today as a side with my fries and snack, because I wasn’t sure it’d retain its full freshness until I could create the rice salad. Now my best friend wants to come by on Sunday anyway, so I’m now not sure whether I’ll be making the crispy rice salad tomorrow or will be postponing it until next week.

Initially, we’d agree to see each other tomorrow, since I needed to get my hair cut. However, this morning I thought I had a cold so canceled the hairdresser appt. My best friend then asked to meet on Sunday because that’s what we usually do. It turned out I don’t really have a cold (though it might be on its way) after all. I do have pretty nasty bowel cramps from the fat in the fries plus the cabbage though. Still not getting enough fiber according to the fitness app.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I’ve been feeling rather upset about the lack of apparent progress on the moving front. It’s not necessarily that I wish I could move sooner, but that I’m afraid the higher-ups are doing things behind my back that I have no say in and that this means they won’t care about where I’ll be moving.

If we were having coffee, I’d end with a photo of this evening’s sky at sunset. It’s now past 11:30PM and I’m going off to bed, I think.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (August 28, 2026)

Hi everyone! I’m joining in with #WeekendCoffeeShare once again. It’s nearly 11PM, so I’m hoping I can finish this post before midnight. I don’t think I even want water anymore before going to bed, but if you’d like a cup of something to drink, feel free to and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. It’s been all over the place. Early in the week, we had cool nights during which the temperature dropped to 7°C. Yesterday was hot again with a daytime temp of 29°C. We got thunderstorms last night and it’s been raining all day today.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I met my movement goal on my Apple Watch each day except for today so far. Now I’m in doubt as to which option is the lesser of two evils: not meeting my movement goal or not finishing this post before midnight. Neither is truly disastrous, of course, but both cause me some autistic error.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that, yesterday, I rode the side-by-side bike to Deventer with a staff. We visited the market, where I bought olives mostly because the vendor was trying to be friendly. I know it’s a selling tactic but I don’t care. Heck, he even suggested he’d see me tomorrow (today) at the other market I frequent. I told him not to get his hopes up.

We also ate lunch and then rode the bike to the town center for Ekoplaza, a health food store. I was looking for silken tofu, but it was in the fridge and I had to cycle nearly half an hour back to the institution, so I decided that wouldn’t be a good idea. Then I bought several other things that I later realized I should’ve bought at the regular supermarket because they were horribly expensive at Ekoplaza. Oh well.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I finally bought myself a food processor. I’m not entirely sure I like the particular model I got, mostly because it has a lot of gadgets I thought I could use but may not be able to after all and it lacks attachments I wish it had. For example, I full on thought it had a grinder attachment but it didn’t. That either means chopping my onions myself or investing in another part (thankfully, the grinder is available as an attachment for this model).

Tomorrow, I’ll find out whether the thing actually does the job it was originally intended for, because I’m going to make a vegan and gluten-free cake that the mixture for needs to be processed. I’m a little saddened that my best friend doesn’t feel well so isn’t going to come by on Sunday. If it turns out good though, I will make it another time for her.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you I did enjoy a dinner prep activity again on Wednesday. I cooked something that was called a curry on the Good Food website but it was more like a bean stew. It had kidney beans, tomato, onions, garlic and ginger in it, in addition to coriander stalks. The coriander leaves were supposed to be used on top of the curry, but the staff forgot those. The weather outside was really nice that evening, so I ate my meal at my outside table.

If we were having coffee, finally I’d share that it’s probably supposed to be this way but I just found out that another person I recently became friends with is a vegan. We met through a peer support group and for a while used to talk mostly about our issues, but today I shared about my Ekoplaza adventure and this got us chatting plant-based food. If there’s a higher power, it’s probably telling me I should go vegan too. Then again, my best friend already told me jokingly that I’m a changeling (referring to a former online nickname) for not fancying pizza tonight.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (August 21, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m once again joining in with #WeekendCoffeeShare. I just had my last cup of coffee for the day. I drank it out of my 40th birthday mug. That is, one of my two 40th birthday mugs, the one with the unicorn. I also had a slice of homemade cake with it. There’s still some cake left. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. Was it seriously blazing hot last week? Now the daytime temperature barely gets above 20°C and it’s been raining most of the week. I tell myself it’s good for nature and at least it’s better than the tropical temps we used to have.

If we were having coffee, next I’d share that I’m still going strong with my movement goal on my Apple Watch. Yesterday I just about met it because it had been raining all day. I did try to do some stretching and other non-cardio exercise yesterday and today. Boy, does one of the probably rather weak muscles in my upper arm hurt now!

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that I did several culinary activities again over the week. On Wednesday, I made another vegan curry. I forgot to take a picture, but it was very tasty.

Yesterday, a staff wanted to make overnight oats because it’s in my day schedule. That day schedule is one thing that needs to be looked at before I move, but that’s a topic for another post. Let’s just say activity-based planning doesn’t work the way I’d envisioned it. Anyway, I said I wanted to make homemade granola. I pulled out a recipe, but didn’t know that there were annoying ads in the way that made it hard for the staff to read the recipe. Plus, this staff rarely cooks or bakes. Thankfully, another staff was able to step in, though it took me having a meltdown and the first staff restraining me before this happened. I finally did make the granola.

The staff apparently got interested, because today when he was assigned to me again and it was too rainy to go outside, he proposed to do a baking activity. We went into the storage room to look for ingredients and asked a more culinary savvy staff for advice. That’s how we got to baking the aforementioned cake. The original recipe called for vanilla, but we didn’t have that on hand, so I improvised and added cinnamon instead. The cake was good, though it was a little too dry for my liking.

If we were having coffee, I’d also tell you that I’ve been hyperfocusing on more fancy things to cook and bake too. For example, earlier in the week or maybe it was last week when making the vegan mango mousse, I found a recipe for a vegan and gluten-free cake. Yesterday, a staff tried to order the ingredients so that I could bake it tomorrow, but the online grocery store the care home orders from didn’t have most of what we needed. That led to a drive to the next town (like I said, it was raining all day, so no bike ride) for the needed ingredients.

Then of course I already baked a cake today. Besides, the one I originally wanted to make tomorrow could best be prepared in a food processor and I still don’t have one. I thought of ordering one yesterday, because Bol delivers the next day, but the day center which serves as the institution’s package collection point was closed today. For this reason, I decided to postpone baking the fancy cake. Thankfully, all ingredients have a long shelf life.

If we were having coffee, finally I’d share that there’s no progress on the moving front yet. I met with the behavior specialist again on Monday to discuss some concerns. This was a good meeting. Mainly, she reassured me that I’m not required to accept whatever new place the bureaucrats decide will be suitable. Like, obviously I can’t turn down a place because of a minor detail (I always jokingly use the color of the carpet as an example), but so far all the criteria I’ve specified sound reasonable to her.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (August 14, 2026)

Hi everyone on this blazing hot Friday. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again. It’s 7:30PM as I start typing this post, so I’ve had my last cup of coffee for the day and will likely be off for a bit before publishing this post to have my evening soft drink and chips. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. Oh, I already disclosed that it’s blazing hot again. We’re on our fifth local heatwave this summer if I’m correct. Today, the daytime high was 36°C. Tomorrow we’re going to have a daytime high of “only” 27°C but it’s going to get humid. I always said summer is my favorite season, but now I’m pretty sure it’s not.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’m still meeting my movement goal on my Apple Watch each day this month so far despite the heat. One reason though is the fact that, yesterday, I rode the side-by-side bike to the next town despite it being at least 30°C. That, honestly, was a stupid decision.

If we were having coffee, then I’d share that I did quite a lot of culinary activities this past week. I finally made iced tea on Monday after having bought loose-leaf green tea on Sunday. I also made a smoothie yesterday and made a tuna salad on Wednesday. No picture, because when it was on my plate, I’d just had an argument with my best friend over my choice to eat dead animals again and this caused me to feel so bad that I didn’t feel like taking a picture. The reason she was upset, by the way, wasn’t necessarily the fact that I eat meat (though that’s a valid reason for her, being a vegan, too), but the fact that I’d told her a few months ago that I would be trying to go vegan when creating my own meals and she felt that I’d lied about my intentions. I hadn’t, but my method of “trying” felt insincere to her. Thankfully, we resolved the argument eventually.

Today, I did create a vegan dessert. I used mango, silken tofu and agave syrup. The staff who helped me make it, didn’t like the strong soy tang,, but I surprisingly didn’t mind. I didn’t particularly like the texture though, which is one more reason I really need to get a food processor.

Mango mousse

If we were having coffee, I’d share that there isn’t any news on the moving front and my Care and Force Act plans probably won’t be fully ready for a couple of weeks at least. After all, both my assigned staff and support coordinator are off until late August and the behavior specialist will be off right after them.

Speaking of which, somehow the orienting of a new staff got messed up yet again this week. My support coordinator had initially said that this staff would be oriented to the activities and ADLs and then we’d evaluate to see if she needed more orienting. A few weeks ago, she told me that the orienting to the activities would be postponed but there wouldn’t be an evaluation after her orientation to my ADLs. This reeks of the one chance policy and I’m horribly upset about it. On top of that, at the last moment the person doing the orienting got switched. Yes, again! I wouldn’t even have found out if I hadn’t inquired about it myself this afternoon. It went kind of okay, but this whole thing still frustrates me to no end.

Now the new staff is an experienced worker, but I have had similar problems with student staff. In late August, a new student staff will start working here and, though my support coordinator thinks she shouldn’t be oriented to me at first, some staff disagree. Besides, if she doesn’t get oriented to me during her introductory time here and the powers-that-be decide later on that she needs to work with me anyway, will we have the same issue we had with the last student as well as with the currently orienting staff, ie. that she isn’t working as an extra anymore? I have absolutely no trust in this entire process.

I’ll sign off now, because I sense that if I continue this will end up being a negative rant again. I’m going to have a cup of green tea now.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (August 8, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again. I initially wanted to write this post yesterday, but got distracted by a lot of other things. As I start typing this, it’s nearly 8:30PM, so I’ve had all of my drinks except for maybe soon a cup of tea. Feel free to grab a cup of your favorite beverage though and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. It’s been hot for most of the week, but thankfully not blazing hot. My best friend says the weather trend is for temps to go down, but when I look at my iPhone’s Weather app, temps above 30°C are in the forecast again for next week. Night-time temps are lowering, thankfully. In fact, last night the temperature dropped to single digits. Unfortunately, it’s still too warm for my liking in my room at night.

If we were having coffee, next I’d tell you that due to the warm weather as well as overthinking, I haven’t been sleeping all that well lately. At least half of the nights this past week, I didn’t sleep until 3AM or later. Thankfully, last night I slept okay.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you I did thankfully still meet my movement goal on my Apple Watch each day. Well, except for today so far, but I still have time. I find that biking feels less bothersome in hot weather than walking, probably because I ride an eBike. Our home’s side-by-side bike has been waiting to get fixed forever, but thankfully the nearby day center allowed us to borrow its bike. On that one, I rode to the next town twice.

Once, I bought some supplies for making iced tea. I bought a large tea container and an ice cube tray. The staff bought jugs. I also finally bought a water bottle, because I want to hydrate more. I don’t have loose-leaf tea yet, so no iced tea has been made so far.

If we were having coffee, then I’d share that I did engage in a few culinary activities this week. Like I shared on Wednesday, I made a cabbage and potato dish for my side of the home.

Today, I made a no-bake cheesecake. I’d always somehow believed that no-bake is easier than baking, but it’s not. I spent over an hour trying to make the bottom, then struggled with the filling layer too. I in part blame the recipe, which wasn’t nearly detailed enough for my needs and said we needed to make the bottom in a blender. I have been saying I want to buy a food processor for months but never got down to it. Now I honestly wish I’d had one. In the end, we made the dough using a stick mixer. The cheesecake turned out quite good after all, but I certainly will get myself a food processor soon.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I finally saw the results of my bloodwork on Monday. I’d had my annual blood test several weeks prior and have had access to my medical records for a few weeks too but somehow the GP hadn’t given me access to this part of the records. Everything was within the normal range except for a measure of kidney function that’s always low for me. My egfr was 67 this time. I in part blame the hot weather and my lack of proper hydration, so that’s why I have been wanting to hydrate more. I say this each summer, but hopefully with the water bottle I’ll finally get it done. My blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides were all excellent.

If we were having coffee, finally I’d share that, on Monday, I’ll have a meeting on my Care and Force Act plan, which details the circumstances under which I can be restrained, this home being locked, etc. I could write a novel on all the things I don’t like about the plan. I won’t now, because I want to end on a semi-positive note. Please wish me luck on the meeting.

Oh wait, if we were having coffee I’d share that I finally figured out a way to display my images in a gallery while still accessible with my screen reader. Please share any (gentle) feedback with me on how this looks visually.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (July 24, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again. I’ve had my last cup of coffee for the day, as usual. I’m soon stepping back to put on my pajamas. Usually I shower on Friday evenings, but today there’s no staff who’s able to assist me. I’ll also take a break for my 8PM meds and evening soft drink. If you’d like to grab a cup of your favorite hot or cold beverage, feel free to and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first as always I’d talk about the weather. It’s been pretty good: partly cloudy with occasional rain and daytime temps around 22°C. We’re supposed to get some warmer weather again next week with daytime temps getting as high as 33°C on Thursday I believe.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that some days, I’m able to get in quite a bit of walking again. My toe still hurts a little, but I was able to go off the naproxen and use just paracetamol now. Due to some stupid miscommunication, I’m now officially prescribed both naproxen and paracetamol, but I just refuse the naproxen.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I’m still struggling majorly with feelings of self-doubt, worthlessness and anxiety. I am quite scared that my extra support hours will be cut. It doesn’t help that there’s major talk in the media about autonomy-based policy, which is an approach populated for people (particularly young women) with chronic, serious suicide or self-harm risk. The idea is that these people need to call for help in preventing self-harm or suicide rather than use these behaviors as a cry for attention. I can see the idea behind it, but it only works if these people actually do get the help they need in preventing harmful behaviors. Since one of the prerequisites is that help needs to be gradually reduced, I can’t honestly see it working for everyone. I mean, I’d love to gradually have my support decreased, but the pressure of it only causes me further problems. Now I’m too old to be a candidate for the official thing and I’m not even in mental health treatment, but the whole idea majorly triggers me. One of the psychiatrists behind this approach does say it’s not the same as leaving patients to fend for themselves, but that’s exactly how it can be used if the pressure from the higher-ups (up to the government) increases. The term didn’t exist in 2017, but if it had, it’d been exactly the code bluff my treatment team would’ve used for doing what they did, ie. kick me out of the psych hospital after nearly a decade with next to no support.

If we were having coffee, I’d end on a positive note by sharing that I cooked pasta for myself again on Wednesday. I used eggplant, capers and olives and it was a completely vegan dish, so I reckoned my fellow residents wouldn’t like it. I however did. That being said, my staff said the eggplant had turned a little greyish. It tasted fine though.

I’m generally more interested in learning about vegan cooking anyway. Not that I will be a vegan or even vegetarian, but I’d like to be a little more conscious of what I eat and also experiment with different ingredients. For this reason, I’ve been adding some more cookbooks to my collection, downloaded off Bookshare. One of them had vegan banana bread in it. I however struggle a little with using the recipes in my Voice Dream Reader app. Then I came across a vegan website that also included a banana bread recipe. I’m going to try to bake that one tomorrow. If it’s good, I told my best friend I’ll leave her a slice.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (July 17, 2026)

Hi all! I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare once again. It’s now 7:30PM, so I’ve had my last cup of coffee for the day. I need to take a shower in about half an hour, so will let my post sit for a bit then and return after I’ve had my medication and evening soft drink. Feel free to grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. We were supposed to get another heatwave here this week. Thankfully, it wasn’t that bad, but only barely so. It’s incredibly dry though. Here’s hoping for rainy weather soon.

If we were having coffee, next I’d tell you I won’t be having a perfect month with respect to my movement goal on my Apple Watch. It’s not necessarily because of the weather. Rather, last week Wednesday, I stubbed my toe and it led to a small fracture. The staff who was here when it happened (in fact, I stubbed my toe on his shoe) initially thought it was just bruised. Unfortunately, I took this to mean I shouldn’t be nagging even though the next day and the next and over the weekend, my toe hurt like crazy. I ignored the pain and kept walking. Then on Sunday, the pain was so bad that I could barely walk outside at all, so the staff who was with me at the time, said we should ring the GP on Monday. The GP’s nurse practitioner came by on Tuesday and said I probably suffered a small fracture indeed. Since it’s my little toe, nothing can be done, but she did give me naproxen for pain relief. It’ll likely take several weeks for my toe to fully heal, but next week, hopefully I’ll be able to get by with just paracetamol.

If we were having coffee, then I’d share that I had a meeting with the behavior specialist, team leader, my assigned staff and support coordinator yesterday about the moving plans. It turns out they have no plans of actually kicking me out against my will. They just believe, like the substitute behavior specialist said about a month ago, that a place for people with brain injury may be more suitable for me. Whether finding me a suitable place is possible given my current care profile and the extra support hours etc., will have to be determined. It’s all quite scary, but I’m not as scared as I was before I had this meeting.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I also had a meeting with the intellectual disability physician on Monday. I went down another 1mg of my antipsychotic. I’m now on 6mg of aripiprazole. I can’t believe I was at one point, for many years in fact, taking 30mg.

We also discussed my getting access to my medical records. Thankfully, she gave me permission. The GP will have to sign me into the system though.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I didn’t cook last Saturday or Wednesday, but I did make another batch of granola on Wednesday. The reason I didn’t cook is the fact that I reasoned it’d be too hard for me given the stress of the two meetings I had. All this being said, I did help with preparing my own lunch by cutting up the vegetables I usually have as a side a few times. This was a good experience.

If we were having coffee, I’d share I did engage in a few creative activities over the past week. One involved making polymer clay earrings. The finished project didn’t satisfy me, but the process was fun.

I also created another unicorn-themed chalk pastel drawing. Can’t remember whether I shared this before, but one of the staff is incredibly creative and she at one point came up with this idea. I used a template for drawing the unicorn and of course I know my six-year-old niece can probably do it better than I can, but who cares? I’m more and more appreciating the fact that I can do something rather than focusing on what I can’t compared to non-disabled people.

This brings me to another creative adventure: photography. I’m hoping to soon take more pictures and to actually share them on the blog. I in fact subscribed to a few blogs that have photo prompts and am liking them a lot. I really would like to expand my creative horizons.

First Steps in Finding a (Truly This Time, I hope) Suitable Care Home

Hi everyone. It’s been a full week since I last wrote a post on this blog. This week has indeed been full. Not necessarily in that anything spectacular happened, but I’ve been hyperfocusing on the home-finding thing.

This is one reason I finally changed my tagline. I’d been annoyed at my old one for years, but could never think of a more appropriate one. Looking back, it should’ve been easy.

So here I am chronicling my complicated care-finding process. I have been looking up various options online and talking to people on Facebook. Specialist client support hasn’t contacted me yet even though they said they would do so this week. Here’s hoping they’ll contact me on Monday or Tuesday.

I haven’t spoken to the team leader or behavior specialist either. My trust is at a very low point and I’m half expecting this to go exactly like it went with my last several moves: not hearing anything for months until the powers-that-be have found a place they think they can send me to. Staff are saying I’ll have a meeting with the behavior specialist and team leader “shortly”, but they for whatever reason aren’t allowed to tell me when. One staff eventually said it’s on the 16th, but my trust is so low after all the comments that I’m not allowed to know etc., that I’m thinking he may’ve made it up to shut me up.

In the meantime, I am looking at possible new places to transfer to. I don’t want to end up in general psychiatric care again and doubt general homes for people with physical disability, vision impairment or brain injury can cope with my behavior. There are places for people with a combination of impairments, but these aren’t widespread. Like I said last week, staying in this area is no longer a top priority for me, but it’s definitely still on my list of things I hope for.

One thing that scares me, is the fact that I have a long history of being too complicated for one place yet not qualifying for another due to my needs not being (perceived as) significant enough. For example, when I lived independently, I kept being told that I “am not crazy enough” for a psychiatric admission, yet once admitted, I had to lie my way out of the locked unit because the open units couldn’t meet my actual needs. Similarly, I’m quite scared that I’m not severe enough for the complex care units and yet I know for sure that regular care homes won’t meet my needs, in that in those, you either have a physical disability or you have significant mental health or behavioral problems.

There is exactly one home in the entire country, if I’m correct, for people who are both visually impaired and autistic. Then again, I doubt it’s either of those disabilities that causes me the most significant problems. I think, and so did the substitute behavior specialist, that it’s my brain injury. Then again, thinking this creates another catch-22, in that my brain injury was the reason my autism diagnosis was at one point removed, yet I didn’t qualify for an acquired brain injury diagnosis either because I had my brain bleed and hydrocephalus in infancy. That’s how I ended up with borderline and dependent personality disorder diagnoses, neither of which truly explains my actual needs.

I can only hope that, in the nine years since I was kicked out of the psychiatric hospital because no place wanted me, I have accumulated enough evidence for my genuine needs that I can at least get sufficient funding. Then the next step is finding a home that will use the funding to meet my needs.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (July 4, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again. It’s nearly 10PM as I start typing this post and I’ll soon need to brush my teeth, but I’ll finish this post before going off to bed. I just had my cup of green tea. If you’d like something to drink either hot or cold, feel free to and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. The heatwave has thankfully ended and we now usually have daytime highs of about 24°C, sometimes even cooler. It’s been quite windy and occasionally rainy too, so I’ve actually even been wearing my jeans again.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that, obviously, I didn’t meet my June monthly challenge goal on my Apple Watch and I didn’t get the perfect month award. So far in July, I’m still meeting my movement goal each day, but I’m not expecting to make it to a perfect month this time either.

I did ride the side-by-side bike to the next town’s market again yesterday. It had been months since I visited the market, but the guy behind the olive stall did recognize me.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you all that I celebrated my birthday at the care home on Wednesday. It was a bit difficult. I’d had big plans for baking two cheesecakes and making a pasta bake for the entire home (20 residents). The cheesecakes were a success, but during the pasta bake preparation process, there were some bumps in the road. However, in the end both were delicious! Yes, even the fellow resident who always complains about food being too spicy, loved my pasta arrabbiata bake. I’d made it once before but had then deseeded the peppers. Not this time.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’ve also been quite crafty recently, particularly early in the week. I crafted two small butterflies out of polymer clay (using a mold), to be turned into earrings later. When my one-on-one for the moment saw my other molds, she wanted to use a bigger butterfly mold that I hadn’t used in years. She proposed to use multiple colors in a marbling technique and chose eight all very different colors, including both yellow and purple. I know a little about color theory and said yellow mixed with purple becomes a horrible brownish color. My staff said that, if the butterfly turned brownish, she’d take it home and display it on her fridge. I ended up giving it to her regardless, but it didn’t turn ugly! I do take the credit for being careful not to overmix the colors, though in hindsight I might’ve undermixed them for the effect she wanted.

Polymer clay butterfly

If we were having coffee, I’d share that this crafty endeavor made me decide to order several other small earring molds. My sister had gifted me a voucher for one of my favorite clay supplies shops and I spent it on molds, cutters and also two new colors of acrylic paint. One of the paints was named sorbet and I had absolutely no idea what color that’s supposed to be. I now realize I could’ve had AI describe the image on the website, but I ordered the color and only discovered that it’s a kind of pink once it arrived.

If we were having coffee, I’d finally share that specialized client support contacted the behavior specialist and they’re now going to get back to me. When I found out they wanted to talk to the behavior specialist, I feared my care agency was going to hijack the entire process. I’m still not convinced that they aren’t, particularly since finding out yesterday that the team leader had informed the staff that I’m leaving before I’d even gotten a clear idea of the consequences of the meeting with the substitute behavior specialist in which she’d posed the question whether I’m in the right place here. It doesn’t help that staff are making all kinds of assumptions about what kind of place would be better suited to me and what I find most important. The truth is, my main requirement is that a future placement’s team, including higher-ups, truly wants to understand and accommodate my needs. I don’t want to have to move again in two or three years.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (June 27, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again. It’s nearly 10PM, so no more coffee for me. I will probably take a break from writing this post (or maybe two) to have a drink of water though. It’s my birthday, but I’m not celebrating it at the care home until Wednesday. My best friend did bake me a nice vegan cheesecake though. No pictures, unfortunately, but it was good even though she said she’d forgotten the added sugar. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. We’re in an extreme heatwave right now. I have hardly been outside since Tuesday because daytime temperatures literally reached over 35°C. The nighttime temp didn’t get below 22°C last night either. The humidity makes it even worse. We’ve had a heat index of 10 out of 10 for the past few days. It’s June, for goodness’ sake!

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that I obviously didn’t meet my movement goal on my Apple Watch most days this week. I haven’t been for walks since Tuesday and, since the heat indoors is unbearable too, I can’t dance either.

If we were having coffee, then I’d moan about my Braille display. It’s got lagging dots again. That’s not the worst, honestly. The worst is the fact that, due to the fact that I’m quite sweaty from the heat, I can’t use my Braille display at all or it’ll for sure get moist damage. I’m trying to type this post using JAWS (my screen reader) with just speech now. Being that I was a Braille-only user for the first 20 years that I had access to a computer with a screen reader, this is quite a challenge.

If we were having coffee, next I’d update you all on the divorce. As it turned out, the two of us signing the paperwork wasn’t the last step in the process. Sure we’d been told, but both of us had forgotten. We each still had to have a video call with the lawyer who’d write the request toe the judge. This was last Thursday and it was easy-peasy. I’d expected to be challenged on some of the details in the agreement that are formally to my disadvantage, but he just asked me to confirm that I agreed to them. The divorce has now been submitted to the judge for approval. This will likely be a piece of cake too, so with all going as planned, we should officially be divorced by early August at the latest.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that my parents, particularly my mother, didn’t take it well. This among other things has caused me to cut off contact with my parents earlier this week. My sister probably knows even though I didn’t tell her, but she’s so far treating me respectfully.

If we were having coffee, I’d then share about my birthday. It’s my 40th and I’d been looking forward to it for a while, but the situation with my parents causes me to feel a bit bummed about it. I spent the day with my best friend. She gave me some lovely gifts. First was a package of polymer clay in colors none of which I had so far. Half are from the Botanical range and I’d been aahing over those for months. The other gift was a mug. I’d already gotten a 40th birthday mug from my home (well, I’ll ultimately pay for it myself, but the others don’t know that). The one I got from my best friend is much better though.

I’ll celebrate my birthday at the home on Wednesday. I will then get the rest of my gifts, but wanted the birthday-theemd ones in advance because my sister and her family were here last week. They gave me a squishy ball and a doll that my nieces probably selected. Today, my sister also sent me a gift card for one of my favorite clay supplies shops.

When I celebrate my birthday here at the care home, I’m going to bake a caramel cheesecake or probably two. I’ll also cook a pasta bake for everyone (both sides of the home). Hopefully it’ll be less hot by then.
