The Wednesday Hodgepodge (October 7, 2026)

Hi everyone. It’s really late once again and I’m not sure I even want to write, but I do want to keep my blog semi-active. I’m joining in with the Wednesday Hodgepodge again. Here goes.

1. Let’s embrace it shall we? What’s something you recently forgot to do? Is your memory these days more like a sieve or an elephant?
I forget to do things all the time, but I can’t think of a specific example right now.

As for my memory in general, it’s both a sieve and an elephant. My long-term memory has always been excellent and, though it’s not as great as it used to be, I believe it’s still better than most people’s at my age. My short-term memory though is quite bad at least compared to how it was when I was younger. Worse yet is my ability to sort the important stuff from the mundane, in that I tend to remember details everyone else forgets and forget what needs to be done all the time.

2. Share a trick/strategy you have to help you remember things you need to remember.
I honestly don’t have one that works yet. I mean, I use an app called Structured to plan my day, but most of the time I just ignore its notifications

I do try to keep engaged in challenging tasks. Currently, these are mostly practical skills. I rarely read longer books these days, but I do try to read and write each day.

3. What’s your favorite fall vegetable to cook with? Do you prefer your fall veggies roasted, blended into a warm soup, or fresh in a crisp autumn salad?
I had to look up examples of fall vegetables, as I’m clueless about what’s in season any time besides summer. My first thought, before I looked them up, was carrot, but now that I know more about what’s in season this time of year, I believe my favorite has to be broccoli. I remember once, many years ago, having a discussion with a staff about the hypothetical scenario in which we had to choose one vegetable to eat for the rest of our life. We eventually settled on broccoli.

As for how to eat my veg, definitely in a stir-fry. That being said, I would love to experiment with salads too. I struggle with soups because they’re too thin to spoon up without making a mess and too thick to drink if they’re at all filling.

4. October 5th is/was National Do Something Nice Day. Did you? If so tell us about it. Or maybe someone did something nice for you, and if that’s the case please share.
I had absolutely no idea there’s even a day for that. It makes me think of the song by Tom Lehrer called National Brotherhood Week. And no, no nice things done by or for me specifically on that day.

5. Nathaniel Hawthorne is credited with the quote “I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.”

Do you tend to spend more time outside this time of year?
As long as it’s not rainy, I love to be outside in the fall. However, I wouldn’t say I spend more time outdoors this time of year than I do in the spring or summer (unless it’s incredibly hot during summer).

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in remembering it’s October 7 and this means it’s been three years since the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel. I’m not an Israel supporter even though I wouldn’t call myself pro-Palestine either. Honestly, this whole day makes me realize why I no longer watch the news more than anything. It’s all so incredibly sad and scary. I used to be quite politically active, but I’d rather stay out of this mess now. For this reason, I honestly don’t know why this reality of it being Oct 7 sits so heavily on my mind today.

The Wednesday Hodgepodge (September 23, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m joining in with the Wednesday Hodgepodge once again. Here goes.

1. Fall arrives this week in the northern hemisphere. Does it look/feel like fall where you live? What’s something you love to do this time of year that makes you feel its officially fall?
It doesn’t look or feel like fall here yet. The temps are still in the lower 20s Celsius and a temperature of 25°C (which is called summerlike here) is in the forecast for next week. I do think I heard some staff say that some leaves are starting to color, but not much.

I don’t really have any fall traditions, honestly. To me, it doesn’t officially feel like fall/winter until the clock falls back at the end of October.

2. What’s a small daily task or chore that always seems to fall through the cracks when your schedule gets busy?
Truthfully? Showering. I don’t like the feel of it one bit and it costs me a lot of energy. It’s the first thing that I avoid when I’m too overloaded. I must of course explain here that I don’t do any daily household chores myself, so that leaves only the bare necessities. As such, maybe I should’ve said every daily chore falls through the cracks.

3. What’s something you’re falling for lately?
Cooking supplies and unnecessary food items. I am almost proud of myself for not immediately having ordered the food processor add-on I’ve been wanting ever since I found out it doesn’t come with the main package right when my benefits came in today.

4.  Pumpkin is a popular flavor this time of year.  Are you a fan?
Not a fan per se, but I don’t hate it either. I actually did love the pasta bake I made last week. Since there’s no actual pumpkin in pumpkin spice, I’m not sure whether that’s included in this question but I do think I’d love that. Still wanting to try a pumpkin spice latte.

5. What’s something you wish would never change? Explain.
My friendship with my best friend. We celebrated nineteen years since first meeting last Saturday. I’m scared it will change though. That is, I know it will with both of us moving and expanding our circles etc. as well as both of us learning to be more authentic, but at least I hope it’ll never fully end.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Today, I was talking culinary activities with my support coordinator and mentioned wanting to bake my own bread at least once. She saw how excited talking about it made me! I’m for sure hoping I can give it a try sometime soon. At least she agreed to order flour and yeast.

The Wednesday Hodgepodge (September 16, 2026)

Hi everyone. It’s been forever since I last participated in the Wednesday Hodgepodge. This is my third attempt at writing this post. If I believed in fate, it should’ve been a sign that I shouldn’t be taking part anymore, I guess. Either that or WordPress just doesn’t like me, since neither the block editor nor the classic editor work nicely right now. Anyway, here are Joyce’s questions.

1. How do you define beauty?
Like Joyce, I think beauty comes mostly from within. I’m going to tease her a little by giving an example tied in with the reason I originally left the Hodgepodge: back in I believe 2023, a trans woman won the Miss Netehrlands contest. She wasn’t the most physically attractive contestant. However, even a Miss contest isn’t about physical looks alone and her confidence for sure shone through. I won’t go into a rant on the entire Miss thing as inherently wrong and, as regular readers of this blog know, I feel strongly about the fact that trans women are women. If you disagree, please don’t start an argument here unless you’re genuinely willing to be educated. My point by choosing this example is, showing up in the world as you are, especially in spite of persecution, is, in my opinion, a surefire sign of beauty.

2. Have you ever taken a trip by train? If so where did you go and what did you think of the experience? If not do you have any desire to do so? Where would you like to go?
I have traveled by train many times. I don’t know what defines a “train trip” vs. just traveling on a train, but the most adventurous train ride I took was a day-long trip from a town near the Germany/Netherlands border to Berlin, just using regional railroads. I used to love train travel back when I still (thought I) was more independent than I am now, but haven’t been on a train in many years.

3. Shell shocked, bombshell, bandshell, shellacking, in a nutshell, walking on eggshells…choose one and tell us why you chose it, or how it relates to your life in some way currently.
I’m choosing “walking on eggshells”, although I could also choose “bombshell”. Both relate to the fact that I’m going to move to another care facility at some point. I didn’t share this with the Hodgepodge community, although some of the participants follow my blog outside of it too so may know. Being told I’ll be moving again was quite the bombshell. I’m walking on eggshells sometimes now fearing I’ll be transferred to a crisis unit if the home-finding process doesn’t go quickly enough.

4. Tacos, pistachios, oysters, clams, eggs…your favorite food on the list that comes in/with a shell?
Tacos I think, although they’re hard for me to eat. I also love eggs. Need to open my bag of pistachios that I bought at Ekoplaza several weeks ago, intending to use them on my vegan and gluten-free cake experiment. I never ate oysters and have no idea what clems are.

5. Are birthdays a big deal in your house? Is your own birthday a big deal in some way? Elaborate.
I have a love/hate relationship with my birthday. Since going no contact with my parents days before my birthday this year, I believe the hate part is stronger. Most of my fellow residents do like their birthdays. This is one reason I usually do try to do a special activity for mine, like cooking a meal for the entire home (20 residents plus staff).

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I already started this post with a random thought I think. Now that I’ve finished the post (in the classic editor) I’m not sure whether to even publish it. At least I did finally write something again and that’s a win.

Share Your World (January 12, 2026)

Hi everyone. I’m joining Share Your World again. Loved this week’s questions. Here goes.

1. How would you describe your laughter? (giggly, deep, infectious? etc)
I think when I truly laugh out loud, my laughter is pretty deep especially for someone assigned female at birth. I don’t really like it, but I prefer it to my non-laughing voice. My voice is quite low for a woman’s, which I don’t mind, but it has some weird screechy feel to it. Eek!

2. What makes you smile?
Lots of things can make me smile, but I am told I especially have a wide smile on my face when recounting fun activities I’ve engaged in recently.

3. Have you ever cried with laughter, and if so, can you remember the circumstances?
Not that I remember.

4. Have you ever laughed at an inopportune moment?
Absolutely. I am an extremely detail-oriented thinker and this means I sometimes laugh at a detail that’s funny even though the bigger picture is rather sad. An example I’ve mentioned quite a few times is the moment a fellow patient in the psych hospital told us that he had been diagnosed with incurable cancer. He for whatever reason needed to name a staff member, but couldn’t remember her name so instead said “fat troll”, referring back to a moment he’d insulted this staff himself. I immediately burst out laughing.

Gratitude

For today’s optional gratitude section, I decided to look into BrainyQuote, an app and website with quotes on it, for a quotation on humor or laughter. I found numerous. Here’s but one of them.

"Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious." - Peter Ustinov

Indeed, this quote shows that the line between satire and reality is often blurry. I in this light remember a story on a satirical Dutch “news” site about riots because an aggressive wolf had been shot. Two weeks later, it actually happened.

Share Your World (December 29, 2025)

Hi everyone. I have a lot of thoughts floating through my mind, but none that I can easily type down. To get my fingers started on something, I’m taking part in Share Your World. Here are Di’s final questions for 2025.

1. Do you stay up to toast in the New Year?
Whether I’ll stay up until midnight depends on my mood. I’ll however most certainly not be toasting in the New Year. The staff here leave at 10:30PM as usual and I’m pretty sure the night staff are extremely busy by midnight with all the clients who are afraid of fireworks.

2.  Have you ever kept any New Year Resolutions made in the past?
I doubt it. I used to make extensive lists of New Year’s resolutions as a teen but I’m pretty sure that if I ever kept one, it was by chance. Now I call them hopes to keep the pressure off.

3. Do you have any plans for 2026?
I have hopes, like I said, although I haven’t penned them down yet. No definite plans at all. Oh wait, I’ll most likely continue to attend the monthly local brain injury meet-up, which has its first meeting of 2026 on January 19. I’m also intending to go to at least one real-life meeting for adults who spent time in the NICU and will attend the mild cerebral palsy meet-up if I don’t contract COVID again.

4. What was the highlight/s of 2025 for you.
There weren’t any high highs this year, but I did have some good moments, such as my cooking activities.

Gratitude

Di always includes an optional gratitude section at the end of her Share Your World posts. For mine, I’m going to include a favorite affirmation from the Gratitude app.

I like how this affirmation compares human life to nature (or rather, the rest of nature). Indeed, I am allowed to go through seasons and each of the seasons prepares me for what’s ahead.

The Wednesday Hodgepodge (December 3, 2025)

Hi everyone. I badly want to write but feel horribly uninspired. For whatever reason, I feel drawn to blog hops in which I haven’t participated in forever, like the Wednesday Hodgepodge. I haven’t participated in forever because I’m not a Christian and don’t want to elicit judgmental comments from fellow participants. I like the questions though and used to love the community spirit. This is a double-edged sword, unfortunately, in that I feel like I cannot fully be myself in Christian-centric communities. However, I can be myself on here and nobody is required to read or comment on my posts. With no further ado, here are this week’s questions.

1. What does it mean to have the “holiday spirit”? On a scale of 1-10 how is yours this year? (10=off the charts, 1=still looking for it)
I was immediately reminded of Tom Lehrer’s Christmas song when I saw this question.

That being said, I’m also reminded of the holiday spirit as referring to the spirit of community and connection to family and friends. In this respect, my holiday spirit is at a 2 at best. I, after all, hardly have any contact with my family and as of this year we’re not celebrating Christmas at my in-laws’ either. Thankfully, I will be going to our house to celebrate the holidays with my wife. However, since neither of us are religious, I don’t think it matters much that we’re being together specifically for Christmas. At least it’s a way to avoid having to spend time with our parents.

2. What’s your favorite character from a (December) holiday-themed movie, book, or TV special? Tell us why.
I don’t think I’ve ever watched holiday-themed movies. When I was a kid, my parents used to watch musicals on TV on Boxing Day, like My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, etc.

The only Christmassy book I remember reading is Murder on Christmas Eve by Ann Sutton. I read it last year, when I was more into the holidays than I am now. It’s a mystery set in 1920s England. Dodo Dorchester, the main character, is quite interesting.

3. Do you like gingerbread? Are gingerbread houses part of your holiday tradition?
I don’t care for gingerbread, but I don’t hate it either. No gingerbread houses here. However, yesterday, I did craft a gingerbread man out of polymer clay.

4. Much of our vocabulary is determined by where we live or where we grew up. What say you- sprinkles or jimmies? lightning bugs or fireflies? soda or pop? sneakers, trainers, or tennis shoes? sub, hoagie, grinder, or hero? freeway, highway, or motorway? frosting or icing? sauce or gravy?
I am a non-native English speaker, so I use the words that I know best: sprinkles; fireflies; soda (or coke); all three for the shoes but mostly sneakers; no idea what the next couple words have to do with each other; highway most of the time; both frosting and icing; sauce for pasta and gravy for meat/potatoes.

5. Share a favorite holiday memory from your childhood.
This is not Christmas-related, but since St. Nicholas is still not over yet (it’s December 5), I’ll share a memory of that. I’ve probably shared it a few times before: the last year that I still believed in St. Nick, my father recorded himself playing St. Nick’s servant Pete claiming to be stuck in the chimney. Not that we even had a chimney at that house, but what did I know? The next year, my father played the recording for me outside of the holiday season to make me stop believing for sure.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Despite not being in the holiday spirit, I did create a few Christmas decorations out of polymer clay over the past few days. Tomorrow or on Friday, I’m also going to bake St. Nicholas-themed cookies.

Share Your World (September 29, 2025)

Hi everyone. When I saw today’s questions for Share Your World, I immediately felt like writing a response. Here are the questions and my answers.

1.  If you could be a flower or a plant, what would you be and why?
There are just so many I could choose from. I could choose lavender for its calming properties and because it’s purple, but someone else already chose that one. After some thought, I decided to go with the Cananga odorata tree (also known as ylang ylang). I absolutely love the scent of its essential oil, which is also calming. I also think it’d be cool to grow fast. The tree is also good for feeding many birds.

2.  Do you believe in magic?
I think so, yes. I’m quite spiritual even though I’m not religious and, besides, even without spirituality, there are the many wonders of nature.

3.   Do you believe in Karma?
Not in its fundamentalist form, because that would mean I somehow brought it onto myself that I’m disabled for something I did in a past life. I think in general, no, I don’t believe in it, but in some specific ways it’s common sense.

4.   Do you live in a community spirited neighbourhood?
I live in an institution, not a neighborhood, so not sure how to answer this question. I mean, yes, there are many institution-wide activities and, when residents and staff from different homes see each other out on grounds, we tend to chat. The staff also help each other out when in need, but I’m not sure that’s out of a sense of community.

Kymber’s Get to Know You (May 1, 2025)

Hi everyone. How is it May already? Time flies and the #AtoZChallenge certainly was a fun thing that made time fly. I really do hope I’ll be able to continue in the flow of blogging, but I won’t promise anything even to myself.

Today, I’m joining Kymber for her Get to Know You prompt. This week, it’s a This or That. Here goes.

1. Shopping online or shopping in-store?
For fun, I prefer shopping online, honestly. It allows me the ability to browse what’s available, whereas in-store I’m dependent on someone to tell me what they see. Because of this, if I could really do all my shopping online and package delivery here to the institution wasn’t as complicated as it is, I’d do all my shopping online. Yes, I do realize that town centers would be empty without stores, as they already are much emptier than they used to be. We’ll find a solution to that though.

Currently, I do go shopping in-store once a week with my best friend and I do love going to the supermarket with my staff. However, the latter is probably because the supermarket doesn’t deliver to the institution and I can’t access the website of the one that does.

2. Science fiction or mystery?
Mystery, although in all honesty I’m not that much of a fiction reader. I do read the occasional sci-fi novel but think mysteries are more my thing out of these two.

3. Movie adaptations or books?
Books. I don’t watch movies, because without audio description I can’t follow them because of missing the visual aspect and with audio description, I can’t follow them because I get overloaded. Then again, like I said above, I am not that much of a fiction lover in general.

Share Your World (March 3, 2025)

Hi everyone. Today, I’m joining in with Share Your World. I love the gratitude section at the bottom of Di’s original post. In fact, I may use it as a jumping point for another post later. For now though, let’s move on to Di’s questions.

1. Which of the following could you NOT do without?
Automatic washing machine, TV/cable, Microwave oven.
I don’t need any of these just for myself and don’t personally use any, although we have all three in the home. If I had to choose which of these to keep in my care home, it’d be the automatic washing machine. Not because I have to do my own laundry, but because the staff are busy enough with it now that they don’t have to do it by hand.

Life without a TV would be so relaxing, as the TV is blaring all day long in the living room that’s adjacent to my room and with the TV directly attached to the shared wall.

2. Which would be your priority of these:
a warm coat or a comfortable pair of shoes.
Comfortable pair of shoes. Simply because, without the right shoes, I just can’t be outside because it’d mean constantly falling.

3. Would you rather have a hot cup of tea/coffee or hot soup?
Hot coffee all the way! I don’t like the feel of soup in my mouth.

4. If you had the choice rather than necessity/cost effectiveness, would you rather rent a property, buy with a mortgage, or share with family/friends and split the cost?
I have no idea. My spouse and I currently own a house (with a mortgage) and it’s stressful with all that we have to do by ourselves (that is, just my spouse) in terms of renovations.

Then again, our rented house was stressful because we were dependent on the housing corporation. In fact, I’ve had more stressful situations with them than I’d like to share.

Sharing with family/friends would also be quite stressful though, as I can’t get along with my parents or sister.

Let’s just end this by saying I’d stay where I am.

Kymber’s Get to Know You (January 9, 2025)

Hi everyone. I have been quite tired over the past few days, so didn’t do much writing. I’m still proud to say that this is my sixth blog post in January. Considering that some months in 2024, I only published five posts total, this is good.

Anyway, regular readers may remember me participating in the Wednesday Hodgepodge for a while. I stopped doing that, because I didn’t like it that the overwhelming majority of participants’ posts were heavily Christian-based. Now though, I seem to have found something to replace it with: Kymber’s Get to Know You. Here are the questions for this week and my answers.

1. What is the most memorable activity you did with your family as a child?
Not an activity we did as a whole family, but play-based learning with my parents comes to mind. For example, my father taught me to calculate squares using computer chips he’d been removing out of the devices himself. I also remember us looking at maps together. My mother also made little books in large print for me to learn to read when I was about four. Here in the Netherlands, children don’t usually learn to read until they’re six, but I was a precocious learner. My parents will probably be proud to see me list these “intellectual” activities.

2. What quality do you appreciate most in a friend?
Acceptance. I want to be myself with a friend and if they aren’t willing to accept that, fine but they aren’t my friend. I will also accept my friends for who they are. I don’t mean that mutual annoyances can’t happen. They happen between me and my spouse, who I consider to be my best friend, all the time. However, when it comes down to it, we accept each other for who we are.

3. What is one characteristic you received from your parents you want to keep and one you wish you could change?
My mother jokes that I inherited all my positive qualities from my father and all my negative ones from her. I was almost going along with it, because indeed the first positive characteristic I thought of comes from my Dad and the first negative one from my Mom. However, I’d like to boost my Mom’s self-esteem a bit (should she ever read this) and lessen my Dad’s. Therefore, I’d like to keep my Mom’s creativity and get rid of my Dad’s snobbishness.
