Looking After My Health

Hi all. Today’s question for Sunday Poser is how well we look after ourselves, health-wise. Sadje observes that most regular bloggers are over age 50. Honestly, I wonder how they do it, if they also lead an active lifestyle in other respects. But this may be a question for another time.

I really struggle with being health-conscious, as I am quite the impulsive type. Thankfully, I never smoked other than the odd whiff and I don’t care for alcoholic beverages either. Food though is a different story. I’m recovering from disordered eating. In my case, it mostly involved overeating and some purging.

Six years ago, when I had just been kicked out of the psychiatric hospital, I weighed 80kg and could barely walk for fifteen minutes at a time. I am 1.53m in height, so this means I had a BMI of nearly 35, or obesity stage II. My spouse recommended I lose weight for my health. I did, although at the time I only had it in mind to lose the 10kg I was in the obese range. However, I never maintained a weight within the overweight, let alone healthy, BMI range until sometime in 2022. My food addiction was just too strong.

Now, thankfully, I’ve been at a healthy BMI for several months. I was talking to my spouse this afternoon and we were discussing my recent clothing shopping sprees. My spouse said I look after my appearance better, but admitted it was hard back several years ago. I started talking about my being “quite chubby,” only to be corrected by my spouse with “No, you were fat.” That’s what I thought too, so it didn’t come across as offensive at all, but I wanted to downplay things a bit in case my obesity wasn’t as bad and I was making a big deal out of nothing.

Back to ways in which I look after my health. I try to eat enough fruit and veg each day, but this is somewhat of a struggle here at the institution. I also walk at least 30 minutes at the bare minimum everyday. I haven’t had a day gone by since owning my Apple Watch that I didn’t meet my stand goal. Of course, this requires me to only move for a minute each hour, but at least I’m not sitting on my butt for hours on end.

I do take multiple medications. Five, in fact, and that means I’m officially classified as having polypharmacy. This means that I’m at increased risk of health issues due to the number of meds I take. Thankfully, I do get bloodwork done regularly to check for things like kidney function, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, etc. Only my kidney function has been off, but it hasn’t decreased over the past year and is still within the mildly decreased range (my egfr is 68, if you’d like to know).

I did get a kind of wake up call a few days ago when I found out someone I met at the blindness training center in 2005 passed away recently at the age of 51. We had a lot in common, including obesity, mental health problems and psych medications, etc. I know, I’m no longer obese, but it’s not like my body has magically forgotten the twelve years or so it spent being overweight.

Thankfully, even though I cannot undo the bad choices I made in the past, I can decide to be more health-conscious from now on. Will it make sure that I live till age 83 like my maternal grandma or 94 like my paternal one? No.

There’s no need to blame ourselves for our health issues. I mean, some folks like to call cancer, cardiovascular disease etc., “illnesses of affluence”. This might be so on a societal level, but it’s sick (no pun intended) to blame the individual for falling ill or dying young. I would love to live to age 83 or 94, but it’s only partly within my control.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (July 29, 2023)

Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I last joined in with #WeekendCoffeeShare, so I thought I’d write a post for it. I just had my evening coffee, as is usual when I sit down to write these posts. I may still grab a cup of green tea later though, since, like I mentioned yesterday, I started using the Water Reminder app again. If you’d like a drink, cold or hot, join me and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, I’d first share about the weather. It hasn’t been summerlike, honestly. Rather rainy and the daytime temperatures barely got above 20°C. It isn’t supposed to get any better soon.

If we were having coffee, then I’d repeat myself by shouting off the rooftops for all of the Coffee Share crowd to hear that YAY, I AM MOVING!!! Of course, as those who read my post from Monday will know, I hardly know any details about my new care home and a moving date hasn’t been set. However, the bits of information I do gather, make me feel like this could be quite positive. I mean, it’s not likely my dream home or anything, but then again that was supposed to be this one, only that dream turned into a nightmare.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’ve been spending more time among my fellow residents lately. It’s not really my choice, truthfully. In part, it’s because I look for familiar faces in the communal room when I get assigned the umpteenth new temp worker. Then when I do get a familiar staff, they often ask me to join the group too. This morning, my one-on-one for the moment sincerely claimed another resident had asked me to come play a game of dice, but I’m not 100% sure it’s true with all the times the staff are initiating it. For those who don’t know, me being in the communal room, unless I’m indeed playing a game with the aforementioned fellow resident, usually means me sitting around doing nothing while the staff chat among themselves or scroll on their phones, thereby my not doing any meaningful activity. Besides, I usually get overwhelmed very easily, but the staff expect me to be able to tell them rather than them picking up on my signs. Today, I was extremely overloaded for over an hour after spending not even twenty minutes in the living room. With the fact that I’m moving, I’m not sure whether the staff want me to practice functioning in the group more so that they can lessen my one-on-one, as that wouldn’t benefit them at all. However, I don’t see any other reason for them to initiate me being in the group so often.

If we were having coffee, then I would tell you I closed all my rings on my Apple Watch every single day this week so far. That’s quite an accomplishment lately, as in late June, I broke my 300-odd day streak of meeting my movement goal and I once again didn’t meet it last week. I honestly have been rather unmotivated in the exercise department recently. This week though, I logged more workouts – mostly walking – than last week.

If we were having coffee, lastly I’d share that I’ve generally been really uninspired over the past couple of weeks. I did make some simple smoothies with my new blender earlier this week, but other than that, I hardly did anything creative. I can only hope I can change this sooner rather than later.

TGIF: A Short But Productive Week

Hi everyone. Today, I’m joining Paula Light’s #TGIF
once again. Paula writes about this being a short week. I almost forgot about that. I mean, we don’t do Memorial Day here in the Netherlands. We have Veterans’ Day, which I believe is on June 29. However, last Sunday was Pentecost and, as with Easter, the Monday after that is called second Pentecost and is an official holiday too.

My week, despite being short, was productive. On Tuesday, I had a meeting with my behavior specialist and a behavior specialist responsible for a possible new care home (or several, I don’t know). They were purposefully vague about the home(s) this behavior specialist is in charge of. Nonetheless, I think the meeting went quite well.

On Wednesday, I was frustrated all day because my Braille display wouldn’t connect to my PC. I thought the problem was the cable, but it wasn’t. In the end, I found out that I had somehow managed to remove my Braille display from within the screen reader’s settings for default Braille display. My Braille display still doesn’t charge properly, for which a technician will come round on Tuesday.

As of yesterday, I am exercising more than I did last month, because I signed up for two challenges in a fitness app called Challenges. Yesterday, in fact, I burned over 500 active calories according to my Apple Watch. Today I’m not yet there, but I did get in significantly more steps. I don’t want this to become an obsession, so I’m making sure I do other activities too. Like, yesterday I created a polymer clay ice cream cone. I later realized that, because I had used white Premo, it needs to be cured at 135°C, but all the other colors are pretty light Fimo soft, for which 130°C is the maximum temperature (and in fact they often darken at this temperature too). I usually cure a Fimo/Premo combo at 130°C and will this time too, but am pretty sure the Fimo colors will be ruined.

This afternoon, my mother texted me asking whether I’d thought about celebrating my birthday (which is on the 27th). If it’s up to her, she’d like for my parents, my spouse and me to go out for dinner. I discussed it with my spouse, who suggested we go to our favorite chicken restaurant, which is about halfway between my parents and Lobith. Or was about halfway between my parents and Lobith, that is, since when looking it up, I found a different chicken restaurant, closer to my parents (so a longer drive for my spouse) and it turned out our favorite chicken restaurant no longer exists. I’m not yet sure what to do now, but I’ll think on it.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (May 27, 2023)

Hi everyone. Today, I’m joining in with #WeekendCoffeeShare. It’s been forever since I last joined in with this linky, but I thought I’d share some highlights of the past week with you all. I just had my morning coffee, but am probably going to finish this post after lunch or in my 30 minutes unsupported time before my afternoon coffee. For lunch, I’m just going to drink water, but since this is a virtual get-together, I won’t keep you from grabbing a coffee. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that the weather has been a mixed bag lately. Early in the week, temperatures didn’t rise above 15°C and we had some rain, but today’s daytime high is supposed to be 22°C and the sky is clear. Next week, we’re even supposed to get daytime highs above 25°C.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I didn’t really get in as many steps as I’d have liked this week. On Wednesday, I had a bad fall while walking. I hurt my knee and elbow and was dizzy for a bit. Thankfully, I only feel my knee a little now. On Thursday, I only managed a few slow and short walks due to the pain though. I did meet my movement goal on my Apple Watch each day.

For the month of June, I’ve signed up for two challenges on the Challenges app. One is a month-long challenge where points are accummulated based on closing each of your three activity rings, while the other allows participants to choose between basing points on steps or closing of the movement ring (I chose steps).

If we were having coffee, next I’d share that I’ve been pretty paranoid about my support lately. I am finding that I look at everything as a sign that the staff are trying to cut back on my one-on-one support hours. Now they say I get two hours more a day than I formally qualify for anyway, so this makes me feel rather, well, off. I can’t see how I can cut back on my one-on-one support hours as is, but I am pretty sure the staff think I can cope with even less than the hours they claim I qualify for.

I mean, I can cope with about half an hour in the communal room playing a game with a fellow resident most days. Today though, I got overloaded by several different sounds (a staff loading the dishwasher, another resident coming into the room and talking loudly to the staff, etc.). While all of these sounds are to be expected in a communal room (though the staff loading the dishwasher could’ve closed the kitchen door), they did overwhelm me. I managed to keep it together relatively well, but did feel upset that my one-on-one staff of the moment didn’t pick up on the signs that I was becoming overloaded. He claimed I could’ve told him myself and that I was making a big deal out of nothing. This further contributed to my thinking that the staff’s aim is to get me to function in the group without one-on-one. Which, of course, I should really aspire for too, but with how overwhelming even half an hour is in that communal room, I can see this just means being confined to my room alone.

If we were having coffee, lastly, I’d tell you that, on Tuesday, I’m going to meet with a behavior specialist for another care home. Like I mentioned before, I really badly want to move out of this home and my current behavior specialist finally approved this last March. They are currently investigating two possible homes here on institution grounds, but aren’t sure yet whether either will be suitable. Wish me luck with the meeting.

TGIF: Twenty-Two Degrees!

Hi everyone. I’m joining Paula Light for
#TGIF, an opportunity to ramble.

Today, let me share about the weather. It’s been okay most of the week with some rain, some clouds and occasionally a bit of sunshine and temperatures rising to about 16°C. That’s cold for May if you ask me. Now I’m no weather expert, so I have no idea what constitutes normal weather for May, but it feels like it should be almost summer-like.

Which, today, it is. The daytime temperature reached 22°C. Well-known Dutch meteorologist Erwin Kroll, who would do the weather forecast on public television in the late 1980s and 1990s and is therefore my face of the weather, once told an interviewer on the audio magazine for blind children that this was his favorite temperature. After all, at 22°C, you can both sit still and move around without getting cold or hot respectively. I love this temperature too, though my ideal temperature is slightly warmer.

I once again wore my blue, flowery skirt that I also wore last week, along with the same blue shirt. In the evening, I changed into shorts, because I was going on the stationary bike. I had also gone for three walks today, so up till this point have nearly two hours of active minutes on my Apple Watch. I intend to still dance some, because I feel compelled to double my movement goal once again.

In other health news, I stepped onto the scale on Wednesday and I finally reached a truly healthy BMI. Yes, you heard me correct, this time it’s not nearly, but actually. Even though my dietitian tells me I no longer need to lose weight and has been telling me so for a while, I’d love to still lose a few pounds. That being said, I understand the dietitian’s logic: with my history of bulimic tendencies, it’s easy to fall into that trap again and a healthy lifestyle is more important than an ideal weight. The last time I was at a healthy BMI, was back when I got married in 2011, but then again back then I engaged in purging behaviors quite a lot too. I never, ever want to go back there.

I do need to make sure exercising doesn’t become compulsive either. That being said, that’s not as likely to happen as my body just can’t go on forever. Then again, actually listening to my body – challenging it when it needs to be challenged beyond its comfort zone and giving it a rest when it needs to rest -, is quite hard. I am working on this though.

Hello Monday (May 8, 2023)

Hi everyone. My weekend was quite good, if a little hectic. I thought I’d share about it. I am linking up with Hello Monday.

On Saturday, I had a temp worker who was here for the first time as my one-on-one staff for most of the morning shift. Thankfully, I got along with him okay. This did mean I didn’t feel comfortable going on a walk, let alone working with clay or other crafty things. I did play a game of Yahtzee with a fellow resident in the morning. My weighted blanket was also finally put in the washing machine. I was a little worried that putting it in the dryer would damage it, but the staff told me he knew what he was doing. Thankfully, once I got back from Lobith on Sunday, I found out it was still intact.

In the afternoon, I got a new temp worker once again, but thankfully my spouse was here almost as soon as the evening shift started, so I didn’t have to deal with the temp worker long. We drove to my spouse’s and my house in Lobith, picking up groceries and Domino’s pizza along the way. I had the hot and spicy pizza with pepperoni, bell peppers, onions and jalapeños.

Because I hadn’t been walking all day on Saturday, I decided to do some dancing in the evening. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have reached my movement goal on my Apple Watch and I didn’t want to cheat by lowering it yet again (and I certainly didn’t want to break my 250-odd day streak).

On Sunday, we visited my in-laws for a bit. My mother-in-law and I went for a 40-minute walk through the village. In the evening, when I once again had a temp worker, but thankfully a somewhat familiar one, I went for two more 40-minute walks. Then, because I could, I danced some more. I finally doubled my movement goal on my Apple Watch for the first time in half a year.

Yesterday evening, I had a bit of an issue with my sister. I invited her to my birthday at the end of June, thinking that if I invited her now she would have plenty of time to make sure she actually could make it on one of the days my spouse and I are available. She got upset, because her and my youngest niece’s birthdays are first (this Saturday and on the 19th, respectively). She tried to ask me whether we would come over for her birthday too, which on the surface seems reasonable. However, being that she has both this weekend and the weekend after that planned pretty full with other family and, besides, we don’t do last-minute planning for trips that are this long (my sister and her family live over two hours away), I decided against it. According to my sister, the way it “works” in our family is everyone knows when our birthdays are and is welcome to come by, so it wasn’t like she should have invited me. Being the people pleaser that I am, I actually almost let her persuade me to allow her to ask her in-laws, whom I barely know, to pick me up when they would be visiting them on the 18th. Thankfully, my spouse intervened and told me that would be really unwise, since what if I have a meltdown either on the trip or when with my sister’s family? Finally, thankfully, it turned out she wasn’t really expecting us, but was just upset that I’d mentioned my birthday this close to hers. I can see her point.

Yesterday, as a side note, was my partner’s and my fifteenth anniversary of being a couple. I really feel pleased that we decided to “call it a relationship”back on May 7, 2008. We’ve overcome quite a few hurdles in those fifteen years, but I’m so happy that we’re stronger than ever together!

The Wednesday HodgePodge (April 12, 2023)

Hi everyone. I’m joining the Wednesday HodgePodge yet again. Here are Joyce’s questions and my answers.

1. April 13th is National Scrabble Day…are you a fan? Do you enjoy word games in general? What’s an eight letter word that tells us something about your life currently?
I don’t like Scrabble, because eventually the board becomes too crowded for me to understand. I do love other word games. There was a game I used to enjoy on the iPhone called 7 Little Words. That is, until they introduced a special “screen reader mode” that was just slightly less inaccessible than the rest of the game had become from then on.

An eight-letter word that says something about my life… clueless. I’ll leave it at that.

2. Do you have a junk drawer? Is it full? Do you know what’s in it? What’s in it?
Not really. Oh wait, the upper drawer in my desk probably counts, as it does have lots of miscellaneous stuff in it, particularly parts that belong to my various gadgets, such as my original Apple Watch wristband (well, only the lengthening half of it, as I recently discovered). I do know of most things in it, but not everything.

3. When does time pass quickly for you? When does it pass slowly?
It passes quickly when I’m engrossed in writing a blog post or in a good book or especially when crafting. Slowly when I am waiting on something.

4. These eight vegetables are in season during spring-asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, collard greens, garlic, herbs. What’s your favorite? Any on the list you refuse to eat? Last one on the list you ate?
Wasn’t this a question last year too? Anyway, my favorite is broccoli. There aren’t any on the list I refuse to eat altogether, but I really don’t like celery. The last one of these I ate was a carrot this afternoon with my lunch.

5. What’s the oldest thing you own? Tell us about it.
I don’t think I own anything old, so I’ll have to guess either my stuffed whale which I’ve had since I was a baby or my desk. Though I’ve owned my desk for only like 17 years, it’s secondhand.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Thank goodness for a bit of sunshine inbetween the rain today. I went for a walk this afternoon and then stopped by the day center cafeteria to have a hot cocoa and a muesli bar, the latter of which my staff treated me to out of the vending machine. Yum!

#WeekendCoffeeShare (March 25, 2023)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare today. It’s past 9PM on the night before daylight saving time sets in, so no coffee for me. I just had an apple-and-cherry flavored Dubbelfrisss with my meds and a small bag of chips. I normally have those at 8PM on Saturdays, but was upset then. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, first I’d complain about the weather. Oh wait, how’s yours? Ours has been rainy and chilly for spring. I want sunshine!

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I’ve been struggling a lot over the past week. I was in a crisis on several occasions. I will spare you all the details but I’m not proud of my behavior. The triggers to my severe outbursts involved disruptions to my day schedule and unfamiliar temp workers being placed with me for my one-on-one support. However, I must admit I’ve been on edge almost all the time even when there were few disruptions to my day schedule. For example, today I got upset because my laundry was put through the washing and drying process twice and this means I haven’t been able to change into my pajamas yet, something I normally do around evening med time at 8PM. In this sense, I understand my assigned staff’s saying yesterday that even if there are no disruptions to my day schedule and I’m supported by super familiar staff all day, I still may get upset. Which, by the way, wasn’t the case today, but we got as close as possible: a familiar staff supported me for half the morning shift and from handover at 3:15PM up till dinnertime at 5PM. For which, by the way, I explicitly thanked said staff. I’m pretty sure I’ll hear that because I got upset at 8PM for a minor reason, by which time a relatively new staff was supporting me, apparently familiarity of staff isn’t the issue. And indeed, there is probably nothing that will prevent me from getting upset altogether, but that doesn’t mean that nothing can be done to prevent the most severe of crises.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I finally saw the dietitian on Wednesday. She’s the same dietitian I saw in my old care home. I had a good talk with her and the absolute best news is I no longer need to lose weight! Not that this ever was the goal to begin with, but I was obese when I started my healthier lifestyle journey with her in January of 2022. Now I’m at a healthy BMI. The dietitian made some recommendations for me to change my diet to get me from losing weight to weight maintenance. She’s also trying to talk my staff into getting me to choose my dinners from the meal service menu again, but I haven’t heard about that so either my assigned staff said no or that’s still up for debate. The reason the dietitian is trying to get me to choose from the menu is the fact that I’m quite a picky eater and, when I don’t like something, I’ll usually skip it and not be sure how to replace it. My eating disorder voice also often chimes in, saying that the fewer calories I eat at dinner the better.

If we were having coffee, lastly I’d tell you I upped my movement goal on my Apple Watch from 300 to 330 calories per day. It’s a bit of a challenge to reach it, particularly now that the weather hasn’t permitted long walks most days. I did go on the stationary bike once (and planned on going onto it several more times but you know how it works with motivation to exercise). I did surpass my goal each day though.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (March 18, 2023)

Hi everyone. Today I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare. It’s nearly 9:30PM as I start writing this post, so I’ve long had my last coffee for the day. I’m afraid I only have water now. However, as this is a virtual coffee share, you can all grab your own beverages of choice. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, first I’d ask about your weather, like I normally do. Ours has been mixed, but usually pretty good. Yesterday and today, the temperature even climbed to 16°C.

If we were having coffee, I would say that yet again I haven’t been as physically active as I’d have liked this past week. However, either my sister doesn’t usually wear her Apple Watch or she isn’t as active either, as we’re “friends” on the Fitness app now and I’m more active than she is according to it.

Yesterday, the support coordinator did take me and two other clients on an hour-long walk, partly through uneven terrain. It was good.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I’m still struggling quite a bit. Like I wrote yesterday, we finally had the meeting on my care. It was mostly validating, but the bottom line is nothing will change in the short term.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that, because of this distressing situation, I’ve been in crisis quite a few times lately. I self-harmed a few times and today, I actually eloped from the care home and wandered around institution grounds for over an hour before the staff found me. I know this isn’t going to help my chances of going to a less behavior-oriented home, but I really can’t keep myself from spiraling out of control like this.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I bought another pair of headphones for like €330 and it turned out I don’t like them. I’d been wanting to buy them forever, but they don’t fit comfortably (are too large) and the noise canceling function isn’t as great as the reviewers say it is. It’s going to be returned.

If we were having coffee, I’d end on a positive note by saying today the support coordinator took me for a walk to the coffee bar (I know you English-speaking folks call it a “coffee shop” but I just can’t bring myself to use that phrase) here in town this afternoon. I had a black coffee and a piece of honey-walnut cake. It was delicious!

#WeekendCoffeeShare (March 11, 2023)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare today. I’m very early by my standards, having just had my afternoon coffee. I probably won’t finish this post till early evening though, since it’s nearly 3PM and I’m allowed another activity hour at 3:30. The coffee maker broke down last week. Then we got a new one yesterday – a really fancy one that can work with beans -, but it broke down today. Thankfully, the Senseo coffee maker still works. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, I’d first ask about your weather. We got snow this week. Like actual snow that remained on the ground. Yesterday was cold and snowy and icy. The rest of the week was mostly cloudy with some rain. Today is okay. We even got a little sunshine and the temperature climbed to 7°C.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I finally decided to contact an independent client supporter re my care situation on Tuesday. These are not affiliated with the care agency, but can help clients with their care plan or finding the right care. The person I spoke to on the phone, asked me a few questions and then would forward my info to a client supporter for my area. This person called me on Friday and we’ll have a phone appt on Wednesday. Unfortunately, somehow, her E-mail confirming the appt and giving me her details didn’t reach me, so I’m going to call her on Monday to let her know.

If we were having coffee, I’d let you all know I’ve decided a whole lot needs to happen if I want to actually stay at my current care home. After all, like I didn’t yet say in my previous coffee share post as I didn’t know back then but have written about since on the blog, the meeting between the behavior specialist, my assigned staff, mother-in-law and possibly me got canceled again on March 2 and has now been set for this coming Tuesday. Apparently, my support coordinator won’t be attending. However, since my last mentioning that I saw some potential for it to work out here and now, I’ve had a few really hard conversations with my assigned staff. These conversations made me feel as though there’s little or no room for improvement. In one of our last ones on my care situation, in which I’d pointed this out, she suggested I go back to living with my husband. This would have been an understandable question from someone who has no clue about my care needs. I’m in fact half expecting this question from the client supporter too. However, my assigned staff should know better. The fact that she – one of the staff who’s most accommodating to my needs – asked this question, to me underlines the fact that this care home’s staff are either clueless or careless about my needs, possibly both. I mean, she meant well and didn’t mean to push me. She said that, while living with my husband would no doubt be hard, so is living here for me. Her reasoning also was that, if she were to marry someone, she’d do so with the intention of living with them. Well, our intention for marriage was to prove to each other that we want to remain a couple for life, nothing more, nothing less.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that once again my exercising has declined over the past week. I in part blame the weather. However, yesterday I took up the courage and went up to another client’s room to ask her and her staff whether I could go on her stationary bike. Turns out it’s not her stationary bike at all, but the home’s. I went on the bike for only eight minutes (and four seconds, to be exact 😉). Today, I did go for two longer walks, totaling 73 exercise minutes on my Apple Watch.

If we were having coffee, lastly I’d tell you I’ve picked up soap making again. My soaps aren’t great so far. I made a simple butterfly soap on Thursday fragranced with lemon and pink grapefruit essential oils. Yesterday, I made another butterfly with lavender and ylang ylang essential oils, but decided to add some mica powder too as a colorant. However, I had no idea yet how to add micas to melt and pour soap, so messed it up quite a bit by adding way too much mica and also adding it to a white rather than clear soap base, among other things. I guess one never stops learning.

How have you been?
